Vol. 303 No. 4

Written Answers. - Cabinteely (Dublin) Garda Strength.

256.

asked the Minister for justice the number and rank of gardaí assigned at present to Cabinteely Garda Station, County Dublin and on 1 January 1973; the area covered by the station and its approximate population on 1 January 1973 and on the most recent date for which figures are available; and if he will recommend an increase in the staffing to the Garda Commissioner.

The present strength of Cabinteely Garda Station is six sergeants and 21 gardaí; on 1 January 1973 it was four sergeants and 16 gardaí. The area served by the station, which has not changed since 1973, can most conveniently be described by reference to the townlands concerned. These total 19 and a list of them is appended. The population of the Garda sub-district on 1 January 1973 was estimated at 25,000; the present population is estimated at 35,000.

I am informed by the Garda authorities, who are primarily responsible for the precise arrangements made for policing particular areas, that the current allocation of gardaí to Cabinteely is the maximum that can be provided at present having regard to the overall demands on Garda resources. The police needs of the area will, however, be further considered according as the additional manpower at present being recruited becomes available for assignment to the various centres.
