Vol. 303 No. 9

Written Answers. - Ophthalmic Opticians.

294.

asked the Minister for Health if he has received representations from the ophthalmic opticians in relation to their position under the health services; the action he proposes to take to remove the disadvantages and discriminatory provisions under which they have to operate under the health services in relation to medical card holders; if he will take steps to ensure that ophthalmic opticians are fuly included in the ophthalmic services provided under the Health Acts to medical card holders; and if he will make a general statement in the matter.

I have received representations from the Association of Ophthalmic Opticians in relation to the manner in which ophthalmic services are currently provided under the Health Acts.

I have already indicated that I am not satisfied with the existing services and that the Government intends to divert resources towards their improvement. I am at present considering the most appropriate manner of effecting such improvement and, in the course of that consideration I will bear in mind the Deputy's view that ophthalmic opticians should be fully included in the services.
