Vol. 304 No. 7

Written Answers. - Noxious Weed Prosecutions.

470.

asked the Minister for Agriculture the number of prosecutions last year and in 1967 for the finding on land of each category of noxious weed.

Eighty-four prosecutions were made in 1967 under the Noxious Weeds Act, 1936, for the finding on land of noxious weeds. A breakdown of prosecutions for each species of noxious weed is not available.

There were no prosecutions in 1977 under the Act; however an intensive advertising campaign on noxious weeds eradication was held during the year as it was decided to place the emphasis on educational rather than punitive measures. In addition proceedings have been taken out this year against ten offenders committed in 1977. Ragwort was found in all ten cases. Thistles were also present in two cases and dock in one.
