Vol. 305 No. 9

Written Answers. - Institute of Medical Laboratory Sciences.

436.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware that recognition of courses organised by the NCEA for medical laboratory technologists has been withdrawn by the Institute of Medical Laboratory Sciences; if he is aware that membership and fellowship of this institute are required conditions by his Department for those aspiring to promotional grades of technologist and chief technologist in laboratories in the health services; and the action he proposes taking to restore the position existing up to the withdrawal of recognition by the institute.

I am aware that the agreement which existed between the Institute of Medical Laboratory Sciences, London, and the former Irish National Committee for Certificates and Diplomas in Medical Laboratory Sciences lapsed upon the transfer of responsibility for validation and awards in the field of medical laboratory sciences to the NCEA.

I am also aware that membership and fellowship of the institute or an approved equivalent qualification are required conditions by the Department of Health for those aspiring to promotional grades of technologist and chief technologist in laboratories in the Irish health service.

I am informed that the NCEA have entered into formal discussions with the institute with a view to establishing professional acceptance of their national certificates and national diplomas in medical laboratory sciences by the institute. These discussions were initiated at a meeting in Dublin on 2 February 1978. I understand that discussions are continuing and that a further meeting is being arranged in London at an early date.
