Vol. 305 No. 9

Written Answers. - Derelict Sites.

359.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he is aware of the numerous derelict sites around this country's major urban areas, and their negative tourism and environmental impact; and if he has any proposals to amend the Derelict Sites Act, 1961, in order to ensure that these derelict sites are cleared as quickly as possible.

The purpose of the Derelict Sites Act. 1961, is to provide a fair but effective procedure whereby local authorities can secure the clearance and improvement of derelict sites which are in a condition injurious to health or amenities. I am not aware that delays in securing the clearance of derelict sites are due to any legal difficulties which would warrant amendment of the Act.
