Vol. 305 No. 9

Written Answers. - European Parliament Elections.

371.

asked the Minister for the Environment if the dates set by the European Council at its recent meeting in Copenhagen for direct elections to the European Parliament are now definite for all nine member states; if the holding of all other elections at the same time are precluded; and, if so, when the next local elections will be held.

The period selected by the European Council in Copenhagen for direct elections to the European Assembly will apply in all member states and the formal decision will be taken shortly by the Council of Foreign Ministers. The holding of other elections at the same time is not precluded. The question of whether the local elections should be held on the same day as the Assembly elections, or whether they should be held on another date in June 1979, or postponed, will be considered in due course.
