Vol. 305 No. 10

Written Answers. - Witnesses' Expenses.

280.

asked the Minister for Justice when the scale of expenses for lay witnesses in court cases was last altered; and the approximate rate by which costs, such as travel, meals, loss of time and so on, have risen since then.

As I indicated in my reply to Question No. 205 of 9 February 1978, I was at that time reviewing the scale of expenses for lay witnesses in court cases, which had been unaltered since 1964. I have since completed my review and a new scale of expenses has been put into operation with effect from 1 January 1978.

Taking all relevant factors into account, the scale has been increased by approximately 300 per cent in so far as travelling, subsistence and allowances for loss of time are concerned. The existing arrangements whereby a salary or wage earner may, on production of an appropriate certificate from his employer, be recouped any permanent loss of wages that he may incur by attending court as a State witness remains in force.
