Vol. 305 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Tea Prices.

13.

asked the Minister for Industry, Commerce and Energy if the National Prices Commission have investigated the present high prices of tea, and blenders' profit margins; and, if so, the measures that are being taken to have these prices reduced.

14.

asked the Minister for Industry, Commerce and Energy the action he proposes to take to bring down the retail price of tea, in line with recent price reductions in Britain.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 13 and 14 together.

I understand that retail prices for tea in this country compare favourably with corresponding prices in the UK. The Deputies will no doubt be aware, however, that our major tea companies have now announced further reductions in tea prices of 4p to 8p per lb. I might add that it is standard practice for the National Prices Commission to examine thoroughly all tea price proposals to ensure that retail prices are kept in line with costs. This involves the monitoring of tea stock costs on a continuing basis so that any reduction in these costs will be quickly reflected in reduced retail tea prices.
