Vol. 305 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Consumer Complaints.

17.

asked the Minister for Industry, Commerce and Energy if he has any proposals to introduce a small claims procedure for dealing with disputes relating to consumer complaints.

I have for some time been considering the possibility of providing rapid and inexpensive redress for small claims by consumers. I have asked the National Consumer Advisory Council to undertake a general study of the problem, and I understand the council hope to submit recommendations to me by about next May.

Is the Minister aware that there is in operation in the UK a most successful scheme involving a small claims procedure for consumer complaints?

I am so aware.

Is he aware of the basis on which this scheme operates?

I am not familiar with the details of it.

Would it not be a wise move for the Minister to familiarise himself with the details of such a scheme with a view to having it as assistance in devising a similar type scheme in this country?

As I said in my original reply, I have asked the National Consumer Advisory Council to undertake a general study of this problem and I am awaiting the council's recommendations which will be available in May.
