Vol. 306 No. 1

Written Answers. - Income Tax.

248.

asked the Minister for Finance the current number of income tax payers.

On the basis of the information at present available it is estimated that the number of income tax payers for 1977-78 was about 760,000.

249.

asked the Minister for Finance the current number of persons who pay income tax on social welfare benefits.

A person whole sole income consists of a social welfare pension or benefit is not liable to tax since income tax thresholds, following the increases in the personal income tax allowances announced in the budget, will be higher than the amounts paid by way of such pensions or benefits. As regards recipients of social welfare benefits who have additional income, statistics are not available which would indicate how many of them are liable to income tax.
