Vol. 306 No. 1

Written Answers. - Ragworth Eradication.

263.

asked the Minister for Agriculture the amount paid in grants by his Department for the eraditcation of Senecia Jacobea, and the number of prosecutions authorised by the appropriate authorities last year, in respect of failure to comply with the legislation promoted by his Department.

Senecia Jacobea (Ragworth) is declared a noxious weed under the Noxious Weeds Act, 1936. There were no prosecutions in 1977 under the Act. However an intensive publicity campaign on the eradication of noxious weeds was held during the year as it was decided to place the emphasis on educational rather than punitive measures. In addition proceedings have been taken out this year against 11 offenders for offences committed in 1977. Ragworth was found in all 11 cases.

A grants system is not operated by my Department for the eradication of ragwort.
