Vol. 306 No. 6

Written Answers. - Secondary School Entrance Examinations.

17.

asked the Minister for Education if he agrees with entrance examinations being used by secondary schools as a method of selecting pupils; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

There is no departmental requirement of an entrance examination to secondary schools. Schools may for their own reason decide to hold entrance examinations and I cannot interfere with their discretion in this matter. While I have no objection to the use of entrance examinations for assessment purposes, I would deprecate the use of such examinations for the purposes of creaming off the students of higher ability.
