asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the amount paid to private firms for undertaking telephone cabling for his Department in 1977; and why this work was not undertaken directly by his Department.

The amount paid to private firms in 1977 for telephone cabling work undertaken for the Department was £5,300,000. Departmental staff were employed to the maximum extent practicable on cabling work.
