Vol. 307 No. 2

Written Answers . - Food Subsidies .

147.

asked the Minister for Agriculture the total amount presently being paid in food subsidies and the increase in the cost of foods presently covered if these subsidies were to be removed.

: The following are the provisions for food subsidies in my Department's Estimates for the current year: Butter and cheese, £15.998 million; Liquid Milk, £24.975 million. These subsidies represent 20p per lb of butter and 3.5p per pint of milk.

In the case of butter a further consumer subsidy is payable, financed entirely by FEOGA. This subsidy represents approximately 8p extra per lb of butter and is expected to cost some £6,500,000 this year. If the national Exchequer subsidy were to be removed the FEOGA subsidy would have to be terminated also.

The consumer subsidy for cheese ceased with effect as from 13 January 1978.
