andMr. Boland asked the Minister for Health the composition of the Food Advisory Committee; the work upon which it is presently engaged; the recommendations made by it in the past two years; and in each case, if he will state which of these recommendations have been implemented in full.

: The Food Advisory Committee is at present in process of being reconstituted. Invitations to membership have issued and nominations have been sought from appropriate organisations. Replies are awaited. Recommendations were made by the previous committee during the years 1976 and 1977 in relation to the following matters:

(1) Microbiological standards for meat, meat products, milk, cream, ice-cream, fish and eggs.

(2) The general use of antibiotics as preservatives in food.

(3) The use of the antibiotics pimaricin and nisin in cheese.

(4) The use and levels of the preservatives nitrate/nitrite in meats.

(5) The use of sorbic acid in jams.

(6) The use of preserving agents in fish.

(7) The use of the preservative secondary butylamine on citrus fruit.

(8) The use of dried milk for infant-feeding.

(9) Recommended dietary allowances.

(10) Food composition tables.

(11) The use of certain infant foods.

(12) Procedure on the marketing of new infant foods.

(13) The role and function of the dietician in the health services.

(14) A compositional standard for sausages.

(15) Guidelines on breast-feeding.

(16) The use of saccharin in food.

The recommendations numbered (1) to (12) inclusive have been implemented in full by my Department. The other recommendations are under consideration.
