Vol. 307 No. 12

Written Answers . - Laois-Offaly Garda Strength .

202.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of gardaí stationed in (a) Tullamore and Portlaoise; and (b) Counties Laois and Offaly, by each sub-district for 1970, 1974 and 1977; if he intends to increase the Garda strength in these areas; and, if so, the names of the stations concerned.

: The figures sought in the question, other than current strengths in the sub-districts of Portlaoise, Tullamore, Mountmellick, Abbeyleix and Birr, are as set out below. Because of security considerations relating to the protection of Portlaoise Prison, strengths in these sub-districts have been increased, but it would not be in the public interest to disclose details.

The commissioner has informed me that the Garda strength in Laois and Offaly is being kept under review. Four extra gardaí were assigned to stations in these counties on the 16 June and there are no proposals at present for further increases in strength in the area.
