Vol. 307 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions . Oral Answers . - Consumer Price Index .

2.

asked the Taoiseach the estimated total increase in the consumer price index of the price increases of recent weeks in house mortgages, butter, cheese, dairy products, bread and petrol.

: The consumer price index is compiled quarterly on the basis of prices actually charged. These prices are the averages of a large number of price quotations collected from an extensive panel of retail and service outlets.

If the maximum price increases permitted for the items specified were implemented in full in all types of retail and service outlets and for all brands of the commodities concerned, it is estimated that the increase in the consumer price index would be 0.4 per cent on the mid-May 1978 level.
