Vol. 307 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions . Oral Answers . - Verolme Cork Dockyard .

9.

asked the Minister for Tourism and Transport if, in view of the likelihood of redundancies at Verolme Cork Dockyard, he will consider giving the green light to have the new B & I roll-on roll-off car ferry built at the yard immediately; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

: The B & I have put forward a proposal for the placing of an order with Verolme Cork Dockyard for a roll-on/roll-off freight vessel. The financial arrangements proposed require careful prior examination. The matter is being considered between the Departments concerned, and all relevant factors are being fully taken into account, including the employment situation at Verolme Cork Dockyard, but I can give no indication at this stage of the outcome.

: These negotiations have been going on for a considerable time, and in view of the fact that management have told the workers there that substantial layoffs will take place if something does not happen, would the Minister consider stepping up these negotiations so that the ship will be put in there immediately?

: The Deputy will appreciate that the problem is a complex one. I am aware of the employment situation in Verolme. Until the discussions between the Departments concerned are finalised, it will not be possible for me to indicate the outcome.

: Surely the Minister knows that, in these matters, he can cut a lot of red tape and get on with the job. When we were in Government people were marching in the streets because an order for one ship went to Japan. I should like an assurance from the Minister that the ship will be ordered on time.

: It is not possible for me to give the Deputy an assurance until the discussions are completed. I think he will agree that the B & I have a good record in relation to Verolme dockyard.
