Vol. 308 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - First-Aid Education.

26.

asked the Minister for Health if he will mount a campaign, in conjunction with the Health Education Bureau, with a view to educating the public in basic first-aid procedures, particularly in relation to accidents to young children in the home.

The Health Education Bureau recently launched a teaching kit, for children aged between nine and 12 years, dealing with safety and the prevention of accidents. An information leaflet on accidents in the home is also available from the bureau. I will ask the bureau to consider the Deputy's suggestion regarding information on basic first-aid procedures for inclusion in future health education programmes.

As most serious accidents occur in the home would the Minister consider introducing a scheme whereby instructors could call to local health centres and educate parents in first-aid?

A number of organisations are engaged in that work at present and I recommend them to anybody.

Is the Minister providing structures and money to help those organisations to carry out their campaigns properly?

We are helping and encouraging them in every way.
