A grant has been sanctioned by my Department towards the cost of erecting a new school to replace the existing Kilcock boys' national school.

I understand that work on the scheme commenced about a month ago and that the Commissioners of Public Works expect that the school will be completed by August 1979.

528.

asked the Minister for Education the national schools in County Meath in which prefabricated classrooms are in use; if, and when, he expects these classrooms will be replaced by permanent classrooms in each school.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 526, 527 and 528 together.

My Department sanctioned a grant in October 1978 for the provision of a fabricast classroom at Cushenstown, County Meath, instead of a standard wooden type of prefab classroom. A grant was sanctioned in May 1978 towards the cost of providing a used prefab at Clonalvey national school, County Meath.

Prefabricated classrooms are in use at the following 25 schools: Skryne, Trim Boys', Maio, Nobber, St. Ultan's Special School, Clonalvey, Carnisle, Cannistown, Carnaross, Kentstown, Athboy, Kilcloon, Rathbeggan, Kiltale, Duleek, Batterstown, Rathfeigh, Boyerstown, Slane, Stamullen, Lismullen, Donacarney, Clonmahon Drangan, Gortloney, Whitecross.

There are proposals to replace the prefabs in the case of 23 of the above schools by new schools or extension schemes. There are no proposals to replace the prefabs at the remaining two schools, Stamullen and Lismullen.

According to records in my Department the following 23 schools in County Meath with accommodation in three classrooms and over have no general purposes rooms: Baconstown, Killyon, Kilbeg, Gortloney, Cannistown, Rathkenny, Longwood, Carnaross, Moynalty, Meath Hill, Culmullen, Robinstown, Yellow Furze, Dunshaughlin, Batterstown, Heronstown, Stamullen, Garadice, Lismullen, Carlanstown, Moynalvey, Bellewstown, Mulhussey.

My Department will be prepared to consider any applications from school chairmen for the provision of general purposes rooms at these schools having regard to the availability of school building funds.

In the following 26 cases arrangements are under consideration or are in hands for the provision of general purposes rooms at the schools in conjuction with extension schemes for the provision of extra classroom space or under proposals for the erection of new schools: St. Michael's, Trim, Flower Hill, An Uaimh, Clonard, Nobber, Kilride, Mulhuddard, Kildalkey, Kilmainhamwood, Kentstown, Killbride, Skryne, Athboy, Kilcloon, Whitecross, Kiltale, Enfield, Duleek, Donore, Curragha, Maio, Rathfeigh, Ballivor, Slane, Ballinacree, Rathbeggan, Donacarney, Clonmahon.

529.

asked the Minister for Education the present position in regard to the proposed extension to Kiltale national school, County Meath.

My Department have sanctioned a grant towards the cost of extending Kiltale national school, County Meath. The Commissioners of Public Works advised my Department in June 1978 that a site extension would be necessary. I understand from the Commissioners that the management authority can obtain a site extension but that land reclamation will be necessary. If the site is ultimately found suitable an amended sketch scheme will be prepared for the purposes of local authority approval.

530.

asked the Minister for Education if he has before him, or if he has sanctioned in the last six months, a proposal for the appointment of an extra teacher at a national school in County Meath; and, if so, if he will give the name of the school and indicate if permanent classroom space is available to accommodate the extra teacher.

Extra teachers have been sanctioned by my Department in 12 national schools in County Meath in the course of the last six months and a request has been received from one of these schools for permission to make a further increase to its total staff.

The attached tabulation gives the names of each of the 12 schools and shows in relation to the authorised staff the permanent accommodation available.

Following is the statement:
