Vol. 309 No. 10

Written Answers. - Irish Art Exhibitions in US.

320.

andMr. E. Collins asked the Minister for Education the total income of the exhibition of Irish treasures in the USA; the proportion of the income coming to Ireland; the proportion coming to the National Museum; and how the amount coming to the National Museum is being, or will be used.

I do not have information about the total income of the exhibition of Irish treasures in the USA. A sum of 250,000 dollars has been paid to the Irish parties in accordance with an agreement with the Metropolitan Museum, New York. The agreement also provides for the payment to the Irish parties of a royalty of 50 per cent of the net profits of sales outside Ireland for a period of ten years of replicas, catalogues and other publications prepared from moulds or photographs of the treasures made by the Metropolitan Museum.

The National Museum has received 20 per cent of the sum of 250,000 dollars already paid to the Irish parties and will receive in due course a similar proportion of the royalties after deduction of expenses. The moneys accruing to the National Museum will be used exclusively for the scholarly purposes of the museum.
