Vol. 309 No. 10

Written Answers. - Loughan House (County Cavan).

325.

asked the Minister for Education if he has issued a certificate of approval for Loughan House, County Cavan; if so, if he will state (a) the date on which it was issued, (b) the number of children for whom Loughan House has been certified and (c) the arrangements he is making for examination and inspection of the educational level of the young people who may be confined there; and if he will place a copy of the certificate in the Oireachtas Library.

I have issued a certificate to the effect that Loughan House is fit for the reception of youthful offenders to be sent there in pursuance of Part IV of the Children Act, 1908: (a) the certificate was issued on 4 October 1978; (b) no specific number of children has been stated; (c) the educational programme will be subject to inspection by the Department's inspectors in the ordinary way.

A copy of the Certificate was published in Iris Oifigiúil dated October 13 1978, copies of which are available in the Oireachtas Library.

326.

asked the Minister for Education the approximate amount of the financial contribution which his Department expect to make towards the running of Loughan House, County Cavan, in the current year; and the heads under which such expenditure will be accounted for.

My Department do not make a direct financial contribution towards the running of Loughan House. The cost of the teaching service, which is provided by the County Cavan Vocational Education Committee, is estimated at £10,000 in the current financial year. This service is grant-aided, in common with the other teaching services provided by the committee from Vote 33, subhead A.
