Vol. 311 No. 1

Written Answers. - Telephone Service.

195.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the number of people who have applied for telephones in Leixlip, County Kildare; the number of people on the waiting list for telephones in this area and when the people who have applied for telephones may expect to receive them.

The answer to the first two parts of the question is about 320. Service will be provided for about 30 of these later this year when cabling work is carried out. It is expected that service will be given to the balance of the applicants next year after extra exchange equipment has been provided.

196.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the number of telephones installed in 1978.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the amount expended from the public capital programme for the development of the telephone system in 1978.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware that an applicant for telephone service in Rush, County Dublin (details supplied) first applied in January 1975; that he was requested to pay £150 in December 1977; that a telephone was subsequently installed in June 1978 but has never worked, and that despite repeated requests on his part, nothing further has happened; and, if so, the steps he intends to take to have service provided for this applicant.

The delay between payment and installation of the telephone arose from the industrial action being taken at the time. When the telephone was installed, it was found that service could not be provided because of a fault in the cable serving the subscriber's premises. It was not possible to clear this fault earlier because of pressure of other urgent work. The cable fault is having attention at present and service will be provided as soon as the fault is cleared. I regret the inconvenience caused to the subscriber concerned.

199.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the number of telephone applications on file in his Department from residents of Wesley Lawns, Ballinteer, Dublin 16; the date of the earliest such application; the estimated total demand for telephones in the estate; the number of residents of the estate who currently have telephone service; and when service will be provided for the remainder of the applicants.

There are 35 applications at present, the earliest having been made in January 1978. It is expected that almost all the 100 householders in this estate, which is only partially developed at present, will apply for service in the course of time. None of the residents has service at present. It is expected that service will be provided in the first half of next year when cabling becomes available.

200.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will state, in relation to the Lynwood estate in Dundrum, County Dublin, (a) the number of applications for telephone service still outstanding; (b) the date of the earliest such application; and (c) the date on which service will be provided to all outstanding applicants.

(a) 33; (b) October 1976; (c) Later this year when the necessary cabling work has been completed.
