Vol. 311 No. 9

Written Answers. - Irish People in Tehran.

190.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will give an appropriate estimate of the numbers of Irish people presently in Tehran; and if he is fully satisfied regarding their safety.

The number of Irish citizens known to be still in Iran is approximately 45 and the vast majority of these are in Tehran. The Irish Embassy in Tehran has over the past several weeks advised Irish citizens to leave the country. Provision was made for the inclusion of Irish citizens in evacuation arrangements which are continuing. Citizens choosing to stay in Iran do so on their own responsibility and while, in a situation not yet fully clarified or stabilised, it is obviously not possible to give an unqualified opinion as to their continuing safety, the information at present available suggests that they are safe at the moment.
