Vol. 312 No. 1

Written Answers. - Public Sector Pay.

142.

asked the Minister for the Public Service further to his Financial Statement of 7 February that the Estimates of 1979 contains a provision for £1,026 million for public sector pay but does not contain any provision "for increases of a general nature which may follow the standard increases under the 1978 national agreement, or for any special increases other than those sanctioned by 31 December 1978" the amount of these increases in 1979.

As pointed out in my Financial Statement, the Estimates for the Public Services, 1979, included a sum of £1,026 million in respect of pay and pensions. This sum contained no provision for any increases of a general nature which might arise following expiry of the 1978 national agreement or for any special increases that might be sanctioned after 31 December 1978.

As part of the budget I set aside a further sum of £75 million "to cover all further pay increases, standard and special, and any additional cost arising from the annual revision of public service pensions".
