Vol. 313 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Social Welfare Benefit Claims.

23.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the number of claims examined by the special investigation unit set up by his Department to investigate social welfare beneficiaries.

The number of claims examined by the special investigation unit to the end of January 1979, the latest date for which returns are available, was approximately 900.

What proportion of these cases were found to be genuine?

I have not got that information.

The Minister has told us that 900 cases were investigated by 13 officers. During which period?

Altogether 2,000 cases were brought to their attention and they have investigated 900 of them so far.

Were the investigations confined to recipients or did they include employers who were not stamping cards?

This is a question of abuse of benefits. The other operation is a separate matter altogether.

The remaining questions will appear on tomorrow's Order Paper.
