Vol. 313 No. 6

Order of Business.

It is proposed to take Nos. 1, 6, 7, 8 and 9. Private Members' Business, No. 66 by agreement, will be taken between 7 p.m. and 8.30 p.m.

In view of what has happened in relation to the break between the punt and the pound sterling since we met last Thursday, will the Taoiseach give Government time for a special debate on this matter? Also, because of the worsening situation in the industrial relations field——

The Deputy may not go into these matters now.

I have given notice to the Taoiseach that I intend to raise these matters.

I got notice from Deputy Barry that he proposed to raise these matters, but I suggest to him that the timetable this week is very full. There is a lot of business to be got through and I do not know if time can be spared. I suggest we might ask the Whips to discuss this matter among themselves.

Both of the matters I have raised are considerably more important than others on the Order Paper. They affect business throughout the country. The employers in the country are of far more importance——

The matter may not be debated now.

I should like to ask the Taoiseach if, in view of the serious public concern at the lack of supplies of petrol and oil, he would ask the Minister for Industry, Commerce and Energy to make a statement——

There are questions on the Order Paper already on this matter.

I am asking if the Taoiseach would request the Minister responsible to make a statement on this matter.

The Deputy may not raise the matter now. The Chair is definite about it.

Will the Chair allow me to raise on the adjournment of the House tonight the matter which I put before him earlier by way of special notice?

I will consider it.

If the Whips can come to an agreement to have the business on the Order Paper concluded by tomorrow night, will the Taoiseach give Government Time on Thursday to discuss the two matters I have referred to?

I do not know if it will be possible to do the business on the Order Paper by tomorrow night. Indeed it will be difficult to have it done by Thursday. Perhaps the Deputy might like the Dáil to sit on Friday, or next week. We will see what the Whips can come up with.

(Cavan-Monaghan): Would the Taoiseach ask the Government Whip so to arrange matters that the debate asked for by Deputy Barry can take place this week?

I will see what the Whips can arrange. The Whips can come back to us.

Would it not be possible to sit on Friday?

It may not be necessary. I said it might be necessary to sit on Friday, or next week.

(Cavan-Monaghan): Would the Taoiseach ask the Government Whip to approach the matter with goodwill so as to facilitate such a debate?

He always approaches matters with goodwill.
