Vol. 313 No. 11

Written Answers. - West of Ireland Drainage.

293.

asked the Minister for Agriculture for the calendar year 1978 (a) the total amount of money allocated for drainage in the west of Ireland, (b) the amount, if any, allocated by the EEC in that year, (c) the amount of money spent on such drainage, (d) the number of applications received for land drainage in County Roscommon, (e) the number processed and (f) the number paid.

The position is as follows:

(a) and (b): As the new drainage scheme for the west of Ireland which provides for part financing by the EEC did not come into operation until 1 January 1979 provision for land improvement—including drainage—in that area was made in the overall allocation of £28 million to the farm modernisation scheme for 1978.

A sum of £420,000 for arterial drainage construction works was provided in the Vote for the Office of Public Works in 1979 in respect of the Corrib-Mask-Robe. However, work on this scheme did not commence until January 1979.

(c) £2.5 million, (d) 736, (e) 469, (f) 325.
