Vol. 313 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Limerick Industry Proposal.

21.

asked the Minister for Industry, Commerce and Energy, the reasons why an industry (name supplied) did not locate in Limerick as originally intended.

22.

asked the Minister for Industry, Commerce and Energy if the decision to establish a new electronics laboratory at UCD will have any implications for the NIHE and for the future development of electronics industries in the Mid-West Region and if he will make a statement on the matter.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 21 and 22 together.

The company shortlisted a number of locations in Ireland for the project. Limerick was very seriously considered as a location but following a detailed study of possible locations the company selected Dublin. The decision on where a new project is to be located is taken ultimately by the promoters.

A decision has not been taken, so far, on where the laboratory should be located but it may be desirable to have this facility near the new project. The new laboratory will assist in the specialised training of graduates and technicians for this and other electronic companies. It would also provide research and development facilities for these companies. Irrespective of where the laboratory is established the benefits would not, therefore, be confined to any one region.

Establishment of the laboratory at a location other than Limerick is not seen as likely to affect development of the electronics programme at the NIHE.
