Vol. 313 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fishing Boat Building Industry.

30.

asked the Minister for Industry, Commerce and Energy if the Industrial Development Authority have any function in the promotion of the fishing boat building industry and, if so, if they have formed any proposals for the rescue of the skilled employment now threatened by the impending closure of BIM yards at Killybegs, Dingle and Baltimore.

Apart from boatyards operated by Bord Iascaigh Mhara which are funded from the Vote for the Department of Fisheries and Forestry, the IDA are prepared to consider applications for grant assistance from companies engaged in the manufacture of boats for the fishing industry taking into account market demand and boat building capacity.

The IDA and Bord Iascaigh Mhara are in consultation about the possibility of identifying alternative employment opportunities for the employees likely to be affected by the threatened redundancies in the Bord Iascaigh Mhara boatyards.
