Vol. 313 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sterling Link Break.

3.

asked the Minister for Industry, Commerce and Energy the increase in the cost of food consequent upon the break with the link with sterling.

As far as I am aware, there has been no increase in the cost of food consequent upon the break of the link with sterling.

Has any projection been made within the Department where imported food products would be involved and is there any anticipation of any effective increase in prices of these items? For example, imported biscuits would cost more. Has any work been done on it?

Work is being done on it in conjunction with the National Prices Commission who at the moment have a commissioned report being prepared for them for discussion. They propose to hold a special meeting to discuss the implications of the break of the link with sterling. To date there has been no application for price increases for foodstuffs based on the devaluation. Perhaps it is a little too soon at this stage to say whether there will be.
