Sixty-seven prison service staff, all of whom received a special course in child care training, were serving in Loughan House.
Four members of the prison service were engaged full-time on staff training activities.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of prison officers recruited into the prison service since 5 July 1977; the institutions to which they were deployed and the numbers to each such institution.
Since 5 July 1977 a total of 453 prison officers were recruited. Of these 430 completed induction training and their initial assignments were as set out in the table below; 20 officers are at present undergoing induction training and have not yet been assigned. Three officers recruited resigned while undergoing induction training.
