Vol. 314 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - National Library.

28.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware of the grave concern felt by readers and researchers using the National Library on (a) the inadequacy of the micro-film facilities provided in the Library; (b) the deplorable state of such facilities that are provided; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am not aware of concern having been expressed by readers and researchers regarding inadequacy of the micro-film facilities provided in the National Library, I am happy to state that the facilities in question are being improved.

To what extent are these facilities being improved and how much money is being spent on their improvement?

I do not think the Deputy would ask me to go into a lot of details. But in respect of what he is concerned about I would tell him that three micro-film machines which were in a bad state, are being replaced and two more machines being provided. I understand that sanction has been given already for the purchase of five new machines at a cost of £450 each plus VAT.

The Deputy will also appreciate that apart from the actual provision of those machines there was, until quite recently, a problem of space in the library. We have taken steps to improve that position and I am happy to indicate to the House that, generally speaking, this service will be better than it has been in the past.

Is the Minister satisfied that the improvements will meet with the approval of the readers and the researchers using these facilities?

The interesting thing about this is that until the Deputy referred to any discontent among the reading public those facts were not made known to me directly nor were the authorities aware of there being any great discontent. They have proposed here what they regard as necessary to update the service.
