Vol. 314 No. 8

Written Answers. - Dublin Derelict Site.

238.

asked the Minister for the Environment, in view of the Government's proposals for local councils to take possession of derelict development sites on short leases, if Crab Lake in Clontarf, Dublin, will be among the sites for development.

The Derelict Sites Act, 1961, empowers local authorities to secure the clearance and improvement of derelict sites which are in a condition injurious to health or amenities. It is a matter for the local authorities to operate the provisions of the Act as they consider appropriate.

These existing powers are adequate to enable Dublin Corporation to deal with the situation at a site at Kincora Road, Clontarf, known as Crab Lake. In May 1973 the corporation gave notice of their intention to acquire the site compulsorily under the Act but in November 1976 my predecessor made an order refusing consent to the acquisition of the site. Since that order was made I understand that Dublin Corporation have been in contact with the owners to secure the clearance and improvement of the site and that they have recently published a notice of their intention to acquire it under the Derelict Sites Act, 1961.
