Vol. 314 No. 10

Written Answers. - International Customs Organisations.

202.

asked the Minister for Finance the international organisation to which the Revenue Commissioners are affiliated, the projects being undertaken by these organisations in which Ireland is participating and if the results are published in Ireland.

The Revenue Commissioners are affiliated to the Customs Co-operation Council (CCC) and the International Union for the Publication of Customs Tariffs.

The CCC are an international organisation of customs experts, with headquarters in Brussels, chiefly concerned with the achievement at international level of harmony and uniformity in customs procedures. Questions relating to customs valuation, customs tariff nomenclature and other technical customs matters are considered at meetings each year of special committees of the council. Other customs matters under consideration are (i) a study for the provision of a harmonised system for the description and coding of merchandise; (ii) questions relating to customs enforcement; (iii) the practical application of computers in the customs field. The results of the work of the CCC are published in the Annual Report of the Revenue Commissioners.

The International Union for the Publication of Customs Tariffs, which Ireland joined in 1969, is a bureau operating under an international convention of 1890 which provides for the publication of customs tariffs of various countries in the English, French, German, Italian and Spanish languages. Ireland is entitled to copies of various customs tariffs in any of the five languages mentioned.
