Vol. 314 No. 10

Written Answers. - North Donegal Industries.

224.

asked the Minister for Industry, Commerce and Energy the job loss in industry in the North Donegal area for each year in the past ten years.

There are no official statistics published of job losses in manufacturing industry.

In its annual report for 1976, the Industrial Development Authority estimated, on the basis of the results of their annual employment surveys, that job losses in manufacturing industry in County Donegal over the four years 1973-76 amounted to 2,350. This aggregate figure probably overstates the incidence of permanent job losses because jobs lost as a result of cyclical factors in a particular year tend to be partially or wholly recovered in subsequent years when economic and trading conditions improve.

225.

asked the Minister for Industry, Commerce and Energy the details of the plans, if any, for industrial development in (a) the Innishowen area and (b) North Donegal area.

The Industrial Development Authority are alive to the need for further manufacturing employment in Innishowen and in North Donegal generally and are prepared to support with their full range of incentives any suitable projects proposed for location in the area.

In their industrial plan for the period 1977-1980 the authority set targets for the creation of 750 new grant-aided jobs in the Innishowen area and for 850 jobs in the rest of North Donegal. As part of their strategy for the promotion of the area the authority have acquired significant land holdings and are pursuing an extensive advance factory programme, details of which are being given in reply to other questions by the Deputy.
