Vol. 314 No. 10

Written Answers. - County Dublin Itinerant Settlement.

247.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he is aware that the people of Priorswood, Newbury, Clonshaugh, Fairfield and Darndale estates, Dublin, while having an official itinerant settlement sited locally, have to endure appalling conditions due to scrap dealers along their roadways littering the open spaces, footpaths, and roadsides with scrap cars, metal and glass refuse, and if he will give any guarantee that the problem can be solved immediately.

The question of the measures to be taken to deal with the situation referred to is one for local authority consideration.

I am advised by Dublin County Council that the problem of itinerant encampments and scrap dealers in these areas has been examined on a number of occasions and that names have been taken with a view to prosecution in a considerable number of cases.

It is understood that the county council intends to intensify efforts to improve conditions in the areas and to arrange for a clean-up in the near future in conjunction with Dublin Corporation.

It is also understood that a number of itinerants in the areas have been offered accommodation but that this has been refused in most cases.
