Vol. 315 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Adult Education Fees.

22.

asked the Minister for Education the reasons for the increase in adult education fees as suggested in recent press reports.

It has been settled policy for many years that tuition fees for adult education courses should cover most if not all of the costs directly involved in their provision. It is normal, therefore, that increasing costs, be reflected in increasing tuition fees.

Can I take it from the reply that the Minister's Department does not want to involve itself in the cost of these courses? In the context of the need for adult education does the Minister not feel a larger input from his Department and EEC sources should be made available to schools and colleges providing adult education courses?

I would be interested in getting a subvention from the EEC. I would be very pleased if the Deputy would indicate how we could get it. The EEC are insistent that they will make money available where training is involved but where specifically educational courses are involved they are not inclined to subsidise.

May I have an answer to Question No. 23?

If the Minister wishes to answer the question, he may.

As the Deputy is en route for St. Malo I will.

I am en route for the Council of Europe.
