Vol. 315 No. 16

Written Answers. - Local Authorities Oil Consumption.

53.

andMr. T.J. Fitzpatrick (Cavan-Monaghan) asked the Minister for the Environment the action being taken by local authorities on foot of the EEC Council decision of 27 March 1979 on the reduction in consumption of oil.

This is primarily a matter for each local authority and, no doubt, they are taking all practicable steps in this regard. On 5 July 1979 my Department issued a circular letter to local authorities advising them of the EEC policy designed to reduce consumption of oil in the Community. Each local authority was asked to undertake an immediate review of its situation and advise my Department within the next month of the measures it proposed to take in this regard and the estimated economies resulting therefrom. In this connection their attention was directed to some obvious conservation measures, such as: limiting space heating to 18º C; boiler servicing; proper maintenance and tuning of vehicles etc.

As yet I have received no reports from local authorities on the outcome of their reviews.
