Vol. 315 No. 16

Written Answers. - Public Service Pay.

91.

asked the Minister for the Public Service the 1979 Budget provision for public service pay; the revised estimate of projected expenditure in the light of wage movements in this sector, the recent Post Office dispute and the application of the revised national understanding proposals.

The total provision made in the budget in respect of public service pay, other pay and pensions was £1,101 million excluding extra provisions in the budget for new jobs and certain additional benefits for veterans of the War of Independence and public service widows.

The best estimates now available indicate that the cost of implementing the first phase of the revised proposals for a pay agreement drawn up between employers and the Irish Congress of Trade Unions would be £55 million in 1979.

I am not in a position to furnish an overall revised estimate of projected expenditure on public service pay and pensions in 1979 as a number of claims are still in course of negotiation.

Questions Nos. 92 and 93 postponed.
