Vol. 315 No. 16

Written Answers. - New Car Revenue.

113.

asked the Minister for Finance the total revenue accruing to the State on the sale of each make of new motor car: (a) assembled in Ireland and (b) assembled elsewhere.

The specific information requested in relation to each make of car could not be disclosed on grounds of confidentiality as regards the sale price at the different stages from manufacturer to retailer. However, as I indicated in reply to a question on 28 March 1979, motor cars are liable to the same rates of excise duty and value-added tax whether they are imported or home assembled and, on average, these taxes are estimated to account for approximately 29 per cent of the recommended retail list price of a motor car.
