Vol. 315 No. 16

Written Answers. - Employment of Solicitors for Elections.

130.

asked the Minister for the Environment if it is necessary for a returning officer to employ a solicitor in the general election, local and European elections of 1977 and 1979 respectively, when the officer is a solicitor himself; if so, the amount paid to a solicitor in (i) 1977 and (ii) 1979.

It is a matter for each returning officer to decide whether to employ a solicitor at an election. Where a solicitor is employed, the amount paid to him is, within the total sum allowed for clerical, legal and other assistance, a matter for the returning officer.
