Vol. 315 No. 16

Estimates, 1979. - Vote 2: Houses of the Oireachtas.

I move:

That a sum not exceeding £3,462,000 be granted to defray the charge which will come in course of payment during the year ending on the 31st day of December, 1979, for the salaries and expenses of the Houses of the Oireachtas, including certain grants-in-aid.

On the Houses of the Oireachtas, which is us, it is interesting how we are passing these vast amounts of money——

Deputies

Hear, hear.

——as a rubber stamp. It is simply my usual delenda est but do we have to, year after year, go through these motions? Why not change to a more realistic system?

It is a farce.

The Committee of Procedure and Privileges has this question under consideration. It is a Committee in which all parties are involved. They are meeting tomorrow and I trust that they will come up with ideas in the autumn in relation to that problem.

We are not getting enough money.

Vote agreed to.
