Vol. 316 No. 6

Written Answers. - Dublin Restaurant Prices.

383.

asked the Minister for Industry, Commerce and Energy if he will request the Prices Commission to undertake an investigation into restaurant prices in Dublin.

Following a recommendation of the National Prices Commission restaurants have been exempted from price control since 1975. In making their recommendation the commission had in mind the virtual impossibility of enforcing any recommendation related to the control of restaurant charges. The commission considered that since no customer is forced to patronise a particular restaurant, the most effective means of ensuring value for the prices paid lies with potential customers.

In the circumstances, I do not consider that I would be justified in asking the National Prices Commission to undertake an investigation into restaurant prices in Dublin.
