asked the Minister for Health if Ireland has more nurses per 100,000 population than any other EEC country, and if so, why.

Latest comparative information available for the EEC countries indicates that Ireland has more nurses per 100,000 population than the other member states. The main reasons for this are, firstly, this country also has, relative to population, more hospital beds than the other EEC countries and, secondly, the other countries generally have difficulty in recruiting an adequate supply of professional nurses and tend to employ more auxiliaries and nursing aides.
