With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to answer Questions Nos. 400 to 404, inclusive, together.

There are 492 mentally handicapped patients in St. Ita's Hospital, Portrane. A mental handicap service is provided at the hospital.

There are 482 nurses employed at the hospital whose duties include the provision of services for the mentally handicapped and 12 ancillary staff are employed full time providing occupational therapy for such patients.

One hundred and ninety mentally handicapped patients are receiving specific therapy services, including occupational therapy. Ten of the nursing staff are engaged in providing these services which represents 2 per cent of the total nursing staff.

It is intended that the new 72 unit will be used for mental handicap patients. It is at present occupied as a temporary measure by psychogeriatric patients to facilitate renovation of portions of the hospital.
