Vol. 317 No. 2

European Communities (Amendment) Bill, 1979: Committee and Final Stages.

Question proposed: "That section 1 stand part of the Bill."

On section 1, I have a short question. The second precondition that the Government of the day put down in relation to Greece's entry was that it would strengthen the Community. May I ask the Minister of State has any decision or recommendation been made specifically with regard to the use of language within the Community organisations, either as part of the Three Wise Men Report or shall we, unilaterally, be making our recommendation that the functional language of the Community be confined to, perhaps, three—say, French, German and English? Has any progress been made on that particular aspect, of strengthening the Community institutions?

I understand that the report of the Three Wise Men is available to the individual Governments in advance of tomorrow's Summit meeting. I may, with the Deputy's permission, correspond with him on the second part of his question, regarding the language in its development. I do not have a specific answer but will deal with it in another way, with the Deputy's permission.

Question put and agreed to.
