Vol. 317 No. 5

Written Answers. - UN Sanctions On Rhodesia.

379.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will confirm that UN sanctions in respect of Rhodesia are still enforced by this country and its citizens, the measures he intends to take to ensure that Irish citizens and companies are reminded of the UN sanctions in view of the confusion arising from recent changes in British legislation in this area and the measures being taken by him in conjunction with other Departments of State to ensure compliance by Irish citizens and companies with the UN sanctions.

The Government continue to implement fully the measures taken within the jurisdiction of the State in fulfilment of our obligations under UN Security Council decisions imposing mandatory sanctions against Southern Rhodesia. As I am not aware of any ground for supposing that there is any doubt as to the Government's position, I do not consider that any particular action is required at present; appropriate action would, of course, be taken should this become necessary.
