Vol. 317 No. 9

Written Answers. - Water Supply Fluoridation.

176.

asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to a recent report by Doctor Dean-Burke in relation to cancer deaths in the Birmingham area, indicating a connection between cancer deaths and fluoridation of water supplies and if he will have this research investigated in view of its possible implications in this country.

I am aware of the report to which the Deputy refers. Reports of this nature are fully investigated as a matter of course to assess possible implications for this country.

In the case of this report, and indeed similar reports relating to 20 cities in the United States, I am satisfied that a relationship claimed between fluoridation and cancer mortality rates has not been established.
