Vol. 317 No. 9

Written Answers. - Kilkenny Hospital Overcrowding.

194.

asked the Minister for Health if he is aware of the present severe overcrowding in St. Luke's Hospital, Kilkenny, and the action he intends taking to rectify this situation.

The administration of services in St. Luke's Hospital, Kilkenny, is primarily a matter for the South-Eastern Health Board. I am aware of overcrowding in the hospital and measures are in train to remedy the situation. A 14-bed extension to the maternity unit at the hospital has been approved and construction work is expected to commence within the next few weeks. A further extension of the unit is also under consideration.

A project team comprising officers of my Department and of the health board has recently completed a planning brief for the overall development of the hospital and a design team has been recruited by the health board for the planning of the project. The brief is at present under consideration in my Department.
